What is a GMT mold?

GMT molds, the full name of which is Glass Mat Thermoplastics molds, are cavity tools of specific shapes and sizes used for producing GMT materials. GMT materials themselves are produced using thermoplastic resins and one or more reinforcing forms (such as glass fiber) on large laminating machines. This process yields lightweight, partially consolidated, semi-finished composite materials. GMT molds are used in conjunction with various systems or auxiliary mechanisms within the mold to fill various high-temperature, liquid GMT materials into the mold cavity, thereby producing GMT parts with specific shapes, sizes, functions, and qualities.
Characteristics of GMT Materials
Lightweight and high strength: GMT materials are lightweight and strong, suitable for replacing metal parts to reduce weight.
Good molding performance: GMT materials have good molding performance and can be processed into products of various shapes by methods such as molding and stamping.

In the automotive industry, in particular, GMT materials are used to produce underbody protection plates, bumpers, rear axle brackets, roof linings, seat structures, and other parts, replacing metal parts to reduce vehicle weight while maintaining body rigidity.
Manufacturing Process of GMT Molds
The manufacturing process of GMT molds usually includes mold design, material selection, processing and manufacturing, and assembly and debugging. Mold design needs to be carried out according to the shape, size, and functional requirements of the product; material selection must consider factors such as mold durability and precision; processing and manufacturing include mold cutting, grinding, and polishing processes; finally, assembly and debugging are carried out to ensure that the mold can be used normally.
